DQ 1. This DQ covers the levels of measurement topic and the sampling topic from week 4. Use your text readings to support your analysis.
Part A: Determine which level of measurement— nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio—is used in the following examples.
1       The Association of Accountants is conducting a survey to determine the ranking of the top 100 accounting firms in the world.
2        How many years did it take you to earn your college degree?
3  On a questionnaire which asks for gender, males are coded as 1 and females are coded as 2.
4    Respondents are asked to rate a list of high-tech companies as excellent, good, fair, or poor in terms of their service delivery.
5   Cereal brands are arranged in an ordered sequence in which an equal interval exists between each point.
Part B: Which sampling method—simple random, systematic, stratified, cluster, convenience, judgment, quota, or snowball—is most appropriate for the following examples?
1  The unemployment rate is calculated each month by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The survey consists of 80,000 households in about 3,000 counties and cities in all 50 states.
2   A researcher for Gumm Foods selects five states randomly, and then selects 10 supermarkets chains within each state to call for a phone survey as test markets for a new cookie.
3  A new product researcher would like to investigate the use of virtual teams. After conducting an interview with a manager, she asks for the names of other managers that use virtual teams.
4   A news reporter asks people on the street their opinion about the president’s new bill.
DQ 2. Choose any 2 of the parts listed below, and discuss the relative merits of, and problems with:
a)      Rating and ranking scales.
b)      Likert and differential scales.
c)      Unidimensional and multidimensional scales.

Select Part A, and only  one of the other two Parts   given below and submit your responses to this thread. In your response, refer to your  course text readings for week 3,  to support your analysis.
Part A: What types of research were done at each stage? Discuss the strengths of each different type given the stage of the project.
Part B: Build the management-research question hierarchy for this project.
Part C: What measurement questions would you use to assess the effectiveness of the Starbucks Duetto Visa in a future customer survey.
DQ 2. In the following situations, decide whether you would use a personal interview, telephone survey, mail survey, or self-administered questionnaire. Give your reasons. You should use your course texts to support your analysis.
(a) A survey of the residents of a new subdivision on why they happened to select that area in which to live. You also wish to secure some information about what they like and do not like about life in the subdivision.
(b) A survey of 58 wholesale grocery companies scattered over the eastern United States, on their personnel management policies for warehouse personnel.
(c) A study of applicant requirements, job tasks, and performance expectations as part of a job analysis of student work-study jobs on a college campus of 2,000 students, where 1,500 are involved in the work-study program.

RES 351 Week 2 complete

DQ 1. Review Cooper text Chapter 11 readings for this week before you respond to this DQ. Listed below are some objects of varying degrees of abstraction. For your initial response, choose ONE of these objects and suggest properties of the object that can be measured by each of the four basic levels of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio). For your follow up response, choose a DIFFERENT object that has been selected by another student, and comment on the student's post.
 A.  Store customers
B.   Voter attitudes
C.  Hardness of steel alloys
D.  Preference for a particular common stock
E.   Profitability of various divisions in a company
In your responses, use the text to support your analysis.
DQ 2. Research Terms Matching Exercise.
Review the   terms listed below, and the definitions listed after the terms. Match the correct definition and term together.
Part 1:
As your initial response, only Pick  two  terms from the list of terms below, and post your response to this DQ thread by Day 5.The purpose of this DQ is for the class to discuss the concepts that are  defined in this assignment - so it is acceptable to post your responses  early - to get the discussion going!
 Part 2:
By Day 6, each student should post their complete response (that is, the response to all the terms) to this DQ thread.   Do not post your complete response for Part 2 before Day 6.
For this DQ, your approach and level of interaction in the DQ thread will be a main evaluation factor, as you interact with your class members on these concepts.  A key factor will be your review of the course texts for these concepts - you will demonstrate this through references to the course text readings to point out the relevant support for these definitions.
 A.      Interval
 B.      Cross-sectional
 C.      Ordinal
 D.     Basic research
 E.      Exploratory
 F.      Longitudinal
 G.     Operational definition
 H.      Ratio
 I.         Applied research
 J.       Nominal
 K.      Descriptive
 L.       Causal
  Research Terms:
  Research Term Definitions
 1. A research study which includes repeated observations over a period of time.
 2. A type of research that uses focus groups or small studies to get a “feel” for the problem.
 3. It means in name only, data that consist of observations that can only be classified and counted by category and have no inherent order. For example: The colors chosen by car buyers at a dealership.
 4. Using basic research methods, the outcome of the research is applied to a business problem.
 5. A measurement scale that has no meaningful absolute zero point. For example: The scheduled arrival times (2:00pm, 2:30pm, and 3:00pm) of delivery trucks at a loading dock.
 6.  Often used in marketing and sales, this type of research always asks “who, what, when, where, and how” in research questions.
 7. A measurement that uses absolute values. Height, weight, distance, and money are all examples.
 8. Numbers assigned to objects representative of the rank order when the distance between each of the measures cannot be determined scientifically. For example, a measure that indicates how a person “feels” on an issue.
 9.  Research conducted where one unit is held steady, while the experiment is conducted on the other unit. This is to test whether the experiment itself is the reason for change in the experimental unit.
 10.   The clinical or scientific method of research. This type of research is often done in laboratories or in controlled circumstances.
 11.   A research question stated in terms of specific testing or measurement criteria. These terms must have empirical referents (this means that we must be able to count or measure them in some way). The object to be defined can be a physical one (a machine tool), or it can be an abstract one (achievement motivation).
 12.   A research study which uses data collected at a single point in time. This gives a snapshot of what is occurring somewhere at a given time.
Resources: The University Library or the Electronic Reserve Readings
Find an article using the University Library that discusses unethical business research or scientific research conduct that has resulted in individuals or a firm being convicted, or at least tried for, this conduct. Note that you should find an article that addresses unethical behavior in a research study. Some examples include the following:
 ·           Asking inappropriate questions as part of the research study
·           Skewing research results
·           Failing to maintain research participants’ confidential information
·           Using research participant information for unintended purposes such as selling goods or services
 Summarize the article you researched.
Write a 750-word paper in which you address the following questions:
 ·           What unethical research behavior was involved?
·           Who were the injured parties?
·           How has the unethical behavior affected the organization, the individual, and society?
·           How could the unethical behavior in a research study be avoided or resolved?
Support your analysis by citing the course text material and including your course text in your references.
Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

RES 351 Week 1 complete

DQ 1. You are a grocery store manager. Suppose your customers have a choice of two grocery stores in your neighborhood. Because most customers hate waiting, they will choose the one store for which there is generally a shorter wait in the checkout line. How would you gather information to determine whether your competitor store or your store has a faster checkout line? Would it be sufficient to visit each store once and time how long you had to wait in line? What is the underlying business problem here? Explain.
DQ 2. Based on an analysis of the last six months’ sales, your boss notices that sales of
beef products are declining in your chain’s restaurants. As beef entrĂ©e sales decline, so do profits. Fearing beef sales have declined due to several newspaper stories reporting Escolar contamination discovered at area grocery stores, he suggests a survey of area restaurants to see if the situation is pervasive.
     (a)   What do you think of this research suggestion?
     (b) How, if at all, could you improve on your boss’s formulation of the research question?
In your response support your analysis with your week 1 course text readings. Consider why sales of beef entrees are declining? Could there be other factors causing this decline?  Use the management research question hierarchy as your starting point for this analysis.
Write a 300-word summary of the business research process by describing the business research process from your experience in the workplace or in a peer-reviewed article you find through the University Library. Note that the word count does not include the title page and References.
Support your analysis by citing the course text material and including your course text in your references.
Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.
